If you like spooky stories, ghostly encounters, or simply want to learn more about the history of Tallahassee, this is a tour you don’t want to miss. The tour I took began at 9p.m. on College Avenue across from the Exchange Building. Tours run Fri, Sat., Sun (Oct 24-26), 2008 and there are different time slots throughout the evenings that are suitable for the entire family.
Our tour guide was a ghost by the name of Dr. George Betton, who was a doctor during the Civil War. If the name sounds familiar, he is the namesake for neighborhoods, parks and schools in the area. He was a very knowledgeable ghost and provided lots of information to those on the tour.
There are a lot of creepy stories that plague Tallahassee. So much of what you see today has a deep history that goes back 100 to 150 years. Shootings, lynchings and illness are just a few of the things you learn about on the tour. The tour takes you though the city parks, past antebellum homes and historic churches, finishing at the Old City Cemetery.
Expect to meet ghosts along the way, including Aunt “Memory” Adams a former slave, Leigh Read a gunslinger and a lady of the night. They are dressed for their time period and are very eager to tell their side of the story. Be prepared for a fright, they like to startle you. It is fun for the whole family and all ages. I learned so much about the local landmarks in the downtown area and you will too. It may leave you wanting to learn more about the haunted happenings in places that seem so ordinary.
